Life-Skills Training by Anantara Academy

Life Skills are psychosocial abilities that enable individuals to translate knowledge, attitudes, and values regarding their concerns into well-informed and healthy behavior. Empowered with such skills, young people are able to take decisions based on a logical process of “what to do, why to do it, how to do and when to do it”.

WHO defines Life Skills as “Abilities for adaptive and positive behavior that enable individuals to deal effectively with the demands and challenges of everyday life”.

UNICEF defines Life Skills as Life skills are transferable skills that enable individuals to deal with everyday life and to progress and succeed in school, work, and societal life. They are comprised of skills, attitudes, values, behaviors, and domain-based knowledge.

Life Skills include psychosocial competencies and interpersonal skills that help people make informed decisions, solve problems, think critically and creatively, communicate effectively, build healthy relationships, empathize with others, and manage their lives in a healthy and productive manner.

WHO has identified ten core Life Skills:

  • Self-awareness
  • Empathy
  • Critical thinking
  • Creative thinking
  • Decision making
  • Problem-Solving
  • Effective communication
  • Interpersonal relationship
  • Coping with stress
  • Coping with emotions

Life skills teach us how to make our lives easier and simpler, how to live a positive life, and how to spend our time wisely. As a result, life skills are essential in our lives. It hones the ability to adapt to a variety of situations and succeed in all aspects of society.

Life skills can include the ability to manage one’s emotions, health, finances, relationships, school performance, etc. – and the ability to master these things has a direct impact on how one feels about himself/herself, emotional balance, physical health, and independence. Having a handle on some basic life skills can give protection from dealing with mental health challenges or making mental health issues more manageable.
